Little Rock, incorporated in 1831, is the capital and the most populous city in Arkansas. The city is located on the south bank of the Arkansas River. The city is best known for Little Rock Central High School, the site of forced desegregation during the Civil Rights Movement. Several major corporations are headquartered in Little Rock, including Dillard's Department Stores, Windstream Communication, and Acxiom.
Little Rock is the cultural center of Arkansas with several fine art establishments and museums. Little Rock is home to the Arkansas Art Center; the Robinson Center Hall, where the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra plays; and the Arkansas Repertory Theater, the state's largest nonprofit professional theater company. Museums in the city include the Historic Arkansas Museum, the Museum of Discovery, and the Old State House Museum.
There are also many parks and outdoor recreational activities in Little Rock. Pinnacle Mountain State Park is located in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. The state park has several hiking trails, including the Arkansas Trail that runs through the Arkansas Arboretum. The Little Rock Zoo and Willow Springs Water Park, built in 1928 and one of the first water theme parks in the United States, are within the city.
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Philander Smith College, and Arkansas Baptist College and the four higher education institutions in Little Rock. The city is served by the Central Arkansas Transit Authority's buses and River Rail Electric System. Bill and Hillary Clinton have both resided in Little Rock.
